Akira is the leader of the Digidestined , and a headstrong one at that. He naturally stepped up, and no one seemed to argue. He's driven by the need to do the right thing, and to impress Naomi.
When Leomon sacrificed himself to protect the focal point from Demimon, the crest of courage was burned into the ground over the seal. Akira then called upon Leomon's strength, and the crest of courage appeared on his chest, giving Dracomon the power to fight against Noxmeramon.
In the Battle for File Island, Akira gets into a fist fight with the Dark Destined Shinji, and the two tear up the jungle fighting against eachother with supernatural strength.

During the battle of Widget Valley, after Naomi had been able to claim the point for the Digi-Destined. Akira had gotten into a fist brawl with Todo Sukazu . The two deemed an even match, but Todo began to gain the upper hand by utilizing a power borrowed from his Digimon HolyAngemon. The two paced one another, but Akira began to exert a strange new power. In a flash, he shouted..
'Destined Digivolution, Courage of the Dragon!'
As the light faded, Akira stood anew, covered from head to toe in armor that resembled his partners Champion form, Coredramon. In this 'Form' he was able to beat back NoxMeramon, and could even use a form of flight with Digital Wings that spread from his back. In this form, Akira has increased strength, speed and endurance. He was the first of the Chosen Children (both Light and Dark) to gain this power.
